The Lyrical Groove is a spoken soul, hip-hop, R&B jazz influenced, band that bridges classic soul and hip hop songs filled meaningful lyrics. Ultimately, the best way to describe their artistry is Soul Music, but by no means is it based on the music, but more comprised of where their music comes from. Their inspiration latent lyrics reflect a social conscious that was very evident in the 90’s classic era of hip hop and permeated through the Neo Soul movement that permeated into the early 2000’s. The grooves embody the diverse musical journey that comprises this group of talented musicians. You can hear a myriad of musical stylings from The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Outkast, Kanye West, Maroon 5, Beyonce, Robin Thicke and many more that span that the spectrum of music.

The Choice Entertainers, as they are eloquently called, began their trek toward stardom in late May 2009, when Mr. Calvin Manson’s vision of resurrecting a musical tribute to the pioneers of the Doo Wop, Pop, Rock and Roll and Rhythm and Blues (R&B) eras was actualized in a play written and directed by Mr. Manson entitled Looking for an Echo, with a sub-title of “Forty years and we still ain’t got no Band.”
Augie Johnson, a Leo, was born in New Orleans, but moved to L.A. when he was five (his father is a musician). Augie began to play the clarinet at age six; two years later he was playing in the American Legion Band. When he was ten, he joined Bob Mitchell’s Boys Choir, and toured with them for four years. He also sang on “High Hopes” with Frank Sinatra. While in junior high Augie took up tenor and alto saxophones, and formed his first band, “The Jazztronauts.” During his years at Washington High School, Augie was active in both instrumental and vocal groups, playing in several and forming a couple of his own. Augie went to Los Angeles City College, majored in music, and met Louis Patton. Then the Army got him. Johnson spent his two years as an entertainment specialist-producing and participating in all kinds of functions, both on the base and in the community.
