Taiko playing was born out of kabuki and festival performance on the magnificent drums — translates to “gift.” While Taiko refers to both the modern art of taiko drumming (kumi-daiko), and to the taiko drums themselves. Taiko in the Japanese classical arts have a history spanning close to two thousand years.

Audiences have been mesmerized with the powerful, spellbinding and propulsive sounds of the taiko drums. Performers express the beauty and harmony of the human spirit through the voice of the taiko as they strive to create new dimensions in Asian American culture. Taiko has broadened and embellished the historical art form into a style that joins the traditional rhythms of Japanese drumming with the beat of world rhythms including African, Balinese, Brazilian, Latin and jazz percussion.
